Last week the top UK Tech businesses were celebrated at the UK Tech Awards 2016. These awards cover both-fast growth and more established tech businesses and it was great to see fast-growth businesses such as Farfetch recognised for their achievements.
The recent Tech Nation report by Tech City UK, highlighted the vital role that tech and digital business has played in the growth of the UK economy over the past year - in particular creating jobs nearly 3 times faster than the rest of the economy. But it's even more important to note that this is occurring all over the UK - the report also notes that 75% of digital tech businesses are outside London.
Government initiatives and particularly devolution such as the Northern Powerhouse have encouraged the growth of regional clusters, but if tech is going to continue to drive economic growth there is still more work to do in improving digital infrastructure, facilitating access to local finance and - the key challenge that we always hear from tech entrepreneurs - bridging the skills gap and making sure that all around the country there is access to talent.
We'll be looking at the talent challenge in our Twitter chat on Thursday 17th November at 12.30pm, so please join our discussion with #PrivateBizChat
What a year it’s been. We’ve seen several noticeable achievements, including the largest tech deal by a UK corporate, a steady stream of IPOs and new companies reaching unicorn status. The UK tech sector is thriving and we should be really proud of our community.
