The former Chancellor George Osborne, is calling on SME's in the region to get behind the Northern Powerhouse with the idea that if businesses work better together, then the region as a whole does better. He says, the concept could expand its reach if more SMEs got involved and combined their strengths.
"I think the business community has completely got behind it but I would like to see more small- and medium-sized business involved. "It is inevitable that when you start this you start with the biggest companies; they have more capacity and people who they can deploy. For the Northern Powerhouse to really take off, Osborne thought the North had to "think big" and "have ambition". "The North was where the country first really thought about itself on a global scale, the first industrial cities in the world were in the North and I want the North to think bigger. "When it comes to big transport projects like the trans-Pennine railway and the potential road tunnel between Manchester and Sheffield, they take years to plan; if you don’t start you will never get to where you start building.
